Basically allow players to create various new troop types (Pike men, crossbow men, mace men, saboteurs, whatever) and allow each of these new types of units to have some advantage / disadvantage vs. the four unit types currently utilized. The flip side is that the alliance / player would only be able to deploy 4 types of units at a time thus allowing balance to the system and more creativity in battle tactics. e.g. Sabateurs may have immunity to missle strikes and mounted attacks but be able to only attack catapults. Thus an attacker using pure cat cav army would be open to sabateur attacks. A defender relying soley on Turrets would have the same problem however the sabateur would be extremely suseptable to traps. Crossbows could have double the attack and armor of archers but half the range and maybe 100 speed. Mace men might be enhanced infantry but only be able to overload 20 vs 80 and have half the speed. Pike men might be like fast infantry 350 speed (to ensure first strike vs cavalry) be take 1/2 damage from cats and 2x damage from archers / crossbows.
Several of these units should require large amounts of stone to build due to the lack of use for stone in most other places.
I also like the suggestion of a spy but that unit should require significant resources to build and perhaps have his chance of success governed by fortune and scouting skills.
