It's because of the way battle commands are calculated. It goes something like this:
1 - Check unit speeds.
2 - Fastest unit type moves.
3 - Next fastest unit type moves, and so on.
4 - Check unit speeds. (Just to keep consistency.)
5 - Fastest unit attacks whatever is in range.
6 - Next fastest attack, etc.
Now let's apply it to your situation.
Turn 1:
Your cavs stay, position 0.
Opposing cats move 137, position 1123.
Your cats stay, position 0.
Turn 2:
Your cavs stay, position 0.
Opposing cats move 137, position 986.
Your cats stay, position 0.
Turn 3:
Your cavs move 825, position 825. Distance of 131 to opposing cats.
Opposing cats move 137, position 849. Distance of 24 to your cavs.
Your cats move 137, position 137. Distance of 689 to opposing cats.
Your cavs attack opposing cats. Your opponent's cats are dead.
