I have a few suggestions. If any of these have been touched on, forgive me. But here goes:
1. Make it worth our while. Prestige is hard to come by in S1. I agree that we should have active NPCs attacking, random numbers. Perhaps introduce a roving band of barbarians raiding and pillaging? Maybe set up an entire NPC civilization to unite warring alliances. I'm all for player vs player, but as has been pointed out, with the rate at which people are quitting, there's not enough to support anyone lower than lvl 18.
2. Age restrictions for expert. I don't know about other servers and any problems they may or may not have, but ad this is a position that should be honored and respected, there are a few glaring examples of experts not doing justice to the title. This is most likely because they are 15-16 year olds that get voted into power by their friends and then proceed to run wc like their own back yard. However, experts of higher age are more fiat and balanced. So please, let's have experts 18+.
3. Coins. Coins coins coins. This is really an expensive game. I know the creators need to make money off of it, but it's gotten to the point that to do almost anything at a higher level you need to shell out a pretty good chunk of cash to get anywhere. This is ok for some, but not for others. It kind of sets up an uneven playing field for everyone. If you got the money, you win the game. Not much strategy there. Especially for moving cities, which is almost required anymore, at least in S1.
In short, I just think it should be made worth our while to play this game. The merge may solve many of these problems, and that's great if it does. But if people are going to pay money that they work for into this game, and be subjected to expert harassment, inability to gain prestige outside of unit production, and unfair battles due to excessive coin purchase by the seemingly far wealthier players among us, then I don't see a reason to continue.
Can't stop, won't stop.
