Speed is by far the single most important attribute, and I highly recommend spending every attribute point you receive on getting it up to 100, before you put a single point in anything else. After that, attack is probably the best route, though fortune has it's uses. Youd be surprised how ineffective the defense attribute can be. The only troop type that is geared for defense and can really benefit from it is the Cav, and when building a Cav army, I would recommend defense. But most generals, especially new ones will build catapults, and defense is virtually useless for them.
A lot of people make the mistake of thinking that a high defense attribute can counter a high attack attribute because both attributes add +0.5% to your base attribute rating. The truth of the matter is, for every troop type except cav and inf, youvare actually getting a higher bonus for your attack attribute than your defense attribute. Let's look at the catapult, for instance...
The cat receives + 1.5 to it's base attack attribute for every point of attack and equipment. For every point of defense and equipment it receives +0.5 to the base defense attribute. This means every point allocated to attack is worth 3 times more than a point allocated to defense. See how much more useful attack is and the advantage it gives you? With speed and shooting tech (increases the range of attack) you need not worry about your defense, even, and you will decimate anything that stands in your way...(or most everything anyway lol but that's another topic)!
