Speed!
Speed, speed. Speed, speed, speed. No matter what build, no matter what tier of play, you can never go wrong with maxing speed before any other stat.
- Faster travel times across the map (Crucial).
- Fewer turns for melee to reach the enemy (Critical).
- Striking first in combat (Imperative).
- Better hunt results in terms of gold (Icing on the cake).
No one stat will grant you more overall benefits than Speed. While its true that at the upper tier of gameplay the defender will often be the one striking first due to both having max speed and same units (Cav), no one would even reach that level of play without having max speed in the first place.
When you can deliver up to 30 attacks per hour with a cav army, you simply have no way to loose. Why wait around for 20+ minutes to see your 3K cats reach a target, when you can bludgeon exponentially more targets with a fast army?
After that comes defense for sure. True, this stat may be negligible at the earlier stages of the game, but once you reach a level where armies simply reach numbers that confound the mind, it all becomes a matter of who looses less troops. Striking first, and surviving the counter-strike in return is the key to this game once you reach that 20k+ Cav, or 10k+ Cat marker.
Attack is still decent to consider. Pretty much the best way to negate an oponent's high defense, but only if you can be absolutely certain you WILL be the one striking first. The more you kill, the less you get hit back. As you can see, this is a big gamble. Defense is safer by far.
Lastly comes fortune. This one is almost worthless. Players with max fortune are very good at one thing, and one thing only...
...to be farmed!
