Random items evolving monsters

I equipped a frost core to Freezy and it evolved to Fragician. (not supposed to happen)

I equipped a dragon horn to Ricky and it evolved to Rocky. (also not supposed to happen)

Both monsters are level 25 and received from magic eggs. The items themselves still remain equipped.

If the monster is the correct level to evolve or higher, and does not require a catalyst. As such from eggs, higher level and basic monsters. When you equip any catalyst it will evolve.

It's so if you get a lvl 36 ricky and need blocky you can evolve it. This has been around since HM-1 as well.
