I disagree with the title to the thread. My alliance on server 65 started out as 2 ambitious, experienced players taking in active, loyal noobs to the game. We fought our way to rank 3, but the top 3 players in our server has more prestige individually than our entire alliance, and they all belonged to one alliance. Our efforts at being the number one alliance was futile, until the update came out. Now we alternate with another alliance for first (depending on the time the hourly pp hits), but later we will strive to create a considerable lead over them.
Now we have a chance to prove how well we work as an alliance, and after all isn't that a big part of being in a team anyway? Now players can choose whether to go for personal gain and aim to climb prestige ranks as an individual, or to put all or most efforts into helping their alliance. As an individual player, you can still go for prestige hits, but if you want to help out your alliance while doing it, you can constantly watch out for and attack the troops of members of the alliance ahead of you, or if you're first, directly behind you, and slow down their farming for resources.
The math is also better. Enhancements and equipment are great and can really help out, but it also gives a hefty advantage to coin-buyers during battle. In the upgrade, taking everything to the base stats brings you back to raw and gritty battle. commanding skills become more essential, and the pressure and pride in the knowledge that people are watching you fight is.. well, i do not have words for it, except that it is amazing.
Give the update a chance, play it with an open mind, and you can discover how to play it in a way that suits you, and like me, maybe you can also be constantly in awe of the new patch.
