Re: Is it wrong to tell non-English speakers to be quiet in wc?

I agree that people should not be muted simply for speaking in their native language. I can understand and appreciate that foreign languages make an experts job much more difficult, but as has been said earlier, this is an international game. That is one of the things I like best about it in fact. It's just awesome to be able to talk to people from around the globe and learn about different ways of life.

That said...

I also think that it can be rude to carry on conversations in non-english languages in WC, and that, if people can, they should type in English. I find it akin to whispering in front of another person. After all, I don't think that it disputed that English is the standard language of communication in Haypi.

So would you say that if you were in a department store, or a restaurant, and heard people speaking in spanish or italian that it's the same as whispering and keeping secrets? That really makes no sense at all.

The reason this argument fails is because you're improperly assuming that they can speak English just was well as whatever other language they are speaking, and you cannot just assume it is the case. If a person comes into wc, and can only speak little to no english, they should not be forced to speak the language that a group of people tell them to speak. I have no idea what it is about this community, but more than once today I have heard that people speaking non-English makes them feel uneasy, and another said she felt threatened. Like, seriously, that is so ignorant it's not even funny.

Just because a place has a high amount of users speaking 1 language does not mean that it is rude or improper (like you seem to be implying) to be speaking something other than that.

Re: Is it wrong to tell non-English speakers to be quiet in wc?

I suppose the reason I have a problem with this: when they can speak english (even if not extremely well) and they don't, they are excluding me from their conversation by choice. I know that this is usually not their intent, but it is the result. I believe that excluding people from conversations in a public forum, if you have the reasonable ability not to, is a rude thing to do. Therefore, since their conversation is, in essence, already a private one, then it should be brought to PM. If there is more than two people, then that is not really possible unless haypi implement's private chat rooms (other than AC), so I suppose WC is the only place for them to do it.

To answer you're topic question "Is it wrong to tell non-English speakers to be quiet in wc": yes. It is rude to tell people they can't talk in whatever language they are most comfortable with.
But I also believe that people should make efforts on their own not to exclude people. And I am aware this goes both ways. I exclude non-english speakers every time I talk. But if I was in a public forum that was predominantly, lets say, Japanese speaking, and I knew passable Japanese, I hope I would make every effort to keep my conversations in Japanese.

I think that's probably the strongest point I've heard arguing the other side. But I think my agreement only extends so far as they are "reasonably able" to speak English. If they have an extremely difficult time, I wouldn't want to make them try.

And I think the "feeling excluded" part is really kind of a personal thing.. I mean, when I see people speaking in another language in wc, I honestly don't think about it for more than a split second, and I don't even notice it for the rest of the time I'm there. I'm never left with a feeling of "aw man I really wish I was a part of that conversation." But I can understand how that enters the realm of subjectivity =]

I think I agree with you on those points.

The "feeling excluded" thing definitely affects different people different amounts. I mean, you are being excluded from their conversation (again, usually not their intent, but still), and it doesn't bother you at all. That's great. Unfortunately, some people can't or don't dismiss it so easily. I believe that is the underlying cause of why some people may feel uneasy or even threatened.

That can't possibly be the rule. That's way too discriminatory. It sounds like it's a "rule" that English-speaking users tried to create, and not an official rule endorsed by Haypi.

I can't find anything in the rules of the game that would support this kind of action. If anything the rules actually seem to disfavor this kind of thing

languages others than englkish are ABSOLUTELY allowed

Re: Is it wrong to tell non-English speakers to be quiet in wc?

There is a very fine line for this I think. If it is just a couple of people speaking a different language thats fine. Same would go if it was just a couple of english speaking guys. It's when it gets closer to 50 50 that things get confusing. Wc just becomes a mess of two or more jumbled languages and no one knows what's going on. I do believe that we should all be able to speak whatever language we want but we all also must recognize that it will make things more difficult for experts and such to control things. I would also add that no mater what language you speak that the rules still apply to all of us. I however agree that no one should be muted simply for speaking a language other than english. I simply say try to speak the more common language of your server and if things don't work out just contact support for help. Maybe one day Haypi could have auto translators in all servers. lol. The beauty of the future. And the whole feeling left out bit is just how some people feel. Not their fault. This has been my longest post to date so I think I'll end it here today, but I think I'll come back to see how things go here. :D
