Sounds like you're having wifi or 3g issues with your device. Try restarting it.

Yes, if you upgrade to 3rd Baron you WILL lose the beginners protection.
You can wait until the 7 days are up if you like by not claiming the reward for the Upgrade General Task if you feel you're not ready to take on the farmers

could be that or router issues move nearer your router if you have an ipod touch or possibly reset your router
