Article Competition - My Story
1236 A.D., the year of our Lord.
I have determined to record the events of this day for any who may ask in later years to know the courage and valor demonstrated by the men gathered here. After a perilous march over treacherous mountains and through dense forest, that is nearly impossible to navigate, we are now encamped upon the ridge overlooking the valley below. Settled within the valley is the city of the tyrant king Kautos.
Just weeks before, my trusted advisor, Auron, had brought news from our scouts to me in the main building of the Royal Hall. The letter reported that Kautos was amassing an army with a terrifying number of siege weapons. The Council of Halcyon was gathered and it was quickly decided to attack at the heart of his territory before he could march on Halcyon.
At the break of dawn my troops formed rank, on what was to be the battlefield, and prepared to move against the city. I took my position upon the field with my captain, Oryiun, at my side. As Kautos troops moved onto the field I ordered all troops to pause at the ready to repel the advancing cavalry. As they moved within range the archers were flagged and they quickly nicked and let loose their arrows with deadly precision upon the enemies cavalry. They were brought down in the field still several hundred feet from our forward line.
Taking care to stay out of range of Kautos' massive gathering of catapults, and the dangerous turrets positioned atop the towering walls of the city, I ordered the archers to move forward and prepare to eliminate the advancing infantry.
"Your Majesty, look," called Oryiun pointing toward the catapults, that heretofore had not moved, as they began to move forward.
"Send the cavalry forward."
"Cavalry, advance!" Oryiun ordered.
The ground shuddered at the pounding of ten thousand hooves, and the air was filled with the sound of thundering hooves as they rushed forward into battle. As they closed in, the catapults and turrets began to open fire. Many were killed, but not enough to stop the surge of cavalry from destroying the catapults trying desperately to fend off the onslaught.
"Move the archers forward against the turrets now while they are focused on the cavalry; and quickly, before we suffer any greater losses!"
"Archers, forward at the turrets," bellowed Oryiun.
Without fear the archers advanced, destroying the turrets raining fire upon the pressing cavalry. Seizing the opportunity the cavalry rushed forward and entered the city, laying siege to the few remaining troops within. As the sounds of battle quieted, we saw the flag of Halcyon being hoisted above the city into the evening sky. Cheers erupted from the troops without, rejoicing that the tyrannical Kautos had finally been defeated.
"Your Majesty," Oryiun applauded, "you have captured the city! You are truly the King of Kings!"

I do not know if this is the type of story the event is looking for, but I enjoyed writing in either way. I would like to say a special thanks to Oryiun and Auron10 for letting me use them in my story. Relations to any other person in the story are purely coincidental!
