Math's Prologue Entry
The hallway was an abyss, darker than night, darker than black. He could feel the weight of it against his skin and feel the pressure as it moved through his lungs. He started to run, he always ran, as if it would help.
A light. A rectangle of hope. The doorway! He had finally found it! Nearly 10 years and there it was!
Almost there. He needed the light. He would lose himself without it.
"Run faster", he told his feet. His clammy hands reached for the door and the protection, the warmth, the guidance - his light.
"Captain!"
He must not stop.
"Captain!"
No! He was too close.
"Captain!"
Rocko Brody woke with a start. He stared at the cold, metallic wall while his heartbeat slowed from that of a hummingbird.
"Captain?"
Rocko closed his eyes and swung tired legs off the bunk. "I told you not to call me that".
"Sorry sir, old habits. Sir? We found one. The Megalodon picked it up on sonar just 10 minutes ago!"
"Why didn't someone wake me? Come sailor! Are they certain? It's one of the relics?" Rocko's heartbeat resumed its supersonic repetitions.
Brody rushed past the sailor with a swiftness he hadn't known in years.
"Sir? There is something else."
The tone in the sailor's voice made Rocko stop so suddenly he almost fell.
"Sir, we aren't alone. The Megalodon reported a vessel to our west and another 350 fathoms below them."
Brody turned and looked into the sailor's fearful eyes. "They must not recover the relic!", he said.
He knew what would happen. These dreams, they were an omen into the future. A premonition from the relics' creators. If the relics fell into the wrong hands the damage would be irreversible.
"Alright, it has begun."
