Changing talent

I'm not sure how I feel about this... I wasted about 15 gems on my blocky and didn't get resurrection and 10 gems on my neon and didn't get adaptability. Although I did only use one gem on my meniss and got hypnosis jinx. Is it luck? I'm not sure.
