UPDATES:

added some info on where to hunt

For people who don't really like to kill and don't check the game often you should keep a large hunting team.
I've been testing a few hunting armies in 3 of my cities (maxed). If you need money fast you should:
Plant 20k infantry in each city -
To do this, either buy or farm resources. The max you can train is 2496 infantry at a time. This takes 15 hours at level 20 barracks (I think)
When training in 3+ cities you can gain 7488
Once you have a set up you, it should look like this:

That picture above is what a sub city should look like

YOUR CROP OUTPUT SHOULD NOT BE LIKE THIS:

This also gives off some nifty prestige. Once you reach 20k DON'T STOP TRAINING. Keep training and sending a batch to a fort to keep the upkeep of them BELOW 12k crop consumption so you would rarely have to check.(or to keep to the point, since this is for inactives, stick to 20k and don't bother  re-training and killing if you can't throw them on hunts straight away)
Here are a few hunts I have experimented with. It's worth checking out what you can grab.

Tip: to guarentee your troops safety after training, make sure you set an alarm or timer
The level of oasis you hunt/harvest in doesn't really matter. Also, when you harvest, make sure it's 6+ hours or so.
I usually harvest mine when I goto sleep, wake up, and get back from school. A nice smooth flow =)

Ok, now lets move on to "Where should I hunt?" and "why do i recieve nothing from hunts?""

Well, i hunt in oasis that are close to me and occupied by me. Hunts work like this: (Please note, that this is a general sense and not the exact theory)
-send troops on a hunt
-wait 8-16 hours
-harvest the hunt

think of the oasis you hunt in as a coin, and once you harvest your hunt, that coin disappears. That coin is the CASH/ITEM/TREASURE
so, if someone else harvests before you.... bam, your hunt will fail

They reset every now and then, the times i'm not certain of.

Hm well infantry are the best hunters of all. You can keep like 80-120k in your main city without even worrying about starvation. Certainly when you enhance your city crop output and occupy LVL9 crops oasis.
I would advice to hunt for 8 hrs. hunting longer than 8 hrs, will not have a positive influence on money/hr you hunt.

Near hunting is infantry also pretty good for farming inactive players. You only need 20K infantry to farm maxed warehouses.
So when you stopped playing for the prestige I would advice you to build a solely infantry army, with some cavs to kill defences, and 9 cats for longer pinns on cities. :P
