Summary
I'm not a coiner, and I don't play pvp all day. Some days /weekends I didn't play at all. Here's the basic strategy for players with similar constraints: BUILD ARMY, ATTACK, HUNT, and DON'T GET WIPED. Then collect your 100 coins.
Building
Within bp:
Main Building 13
Warehouse > 20k
Crop 7-8 ENHANCE for TWO weeks
By the end of bp (when it breaks or you level up to 4):
Cranny 20 (so you don't starve if you get farmed)
Barracks >15
Crop: High enough to support your army. I'd say at least 7-8 is fine
Coins: >25 (leave coins for bailing out of fights that you will lose, but basically you want to have spent most of your coins by this point)
After this I don't worry too much about building infrastructure. Just continue to build normally (don't need to speed finish). I have never finished a pvp with a maxed main building nor a maxed warehouse. I usually build crop to 12 by the end of pvp.
Army
While in main I'm a cav/arch kind of girl, in pvp I play inf/cat. Why? Because more people play with traps (this explains the inf) and because alerts don't get sent, so map traversal time is less of an issue. How big of an army do you need? The answer depends on what rank you are trying to achieve. If you want to get top 50 I think 2k cats minimum will probably do it. If you want to get top 200, 800 is pretty solid. Why so few? Cause we're picking our battles and we don't want to starve.
Oases
Don't bother getting your own oases. Just steal them! Why?
1) We are lazy and don't want to forget our army is attacking or forget that our army attacked and is sitting in the oasis
2) Oases give you resources so you can build more troops
3) It's faster than getting them yourself
4) You make your neighbors mad
Why is it good to rile up your neighbor over a stolen oasis? In their rage they might foolishly attack you! Then you can wipe them.
5) You can quickly take far away oases to use as portals between your cities
VIP
Get it. When? Right away. Then when the week is over, wait until there are 7 days left in pvp and get it again. You'll want it for that last day of frenzied attacking and building.
Skills
I choose break cranny and hidden attack. Why hidden attack? Alerts don't get sent! Well they still won't show up in red on the main screen, so it's possible an unwitting player might not see your hidden attack. I've snuck attacks in on people who were online and just didn't think to check their actions tab. I don't put points in convince because I don't defend very often or get attacked very often as I max scouting early.
Put your skill points toward speed. If you have to choose horse or manual, pick horse. Then enhance your horse with your free stones.
Techs
March & Shoot are the most important, followed by Scout and Crop. After those I usually spring for level 5 traps. Note that unless you can get enough dough to get level 9 or 10 turrets and can build them, turrets are basically useless. Anyone with level 5 shoot can wipe them with no losses. If I've got extra cash lying around I would level up the resources and attack.
To Break BP or Not
I'd advise you to break bp when you've got a decent amount of troops (100,100,1,200 is my suggestion) and cranny at a level where if you get hit you won't starve too quickly. For me this usually takes until a few hours before bp is up anyway. I also like to get my techs up rather high before breaking bp, but that's personal preference. I don't think it makes a huge difference if you break or don't break bp.
To Level or Not
I level. Some people like to stay a low level so to take advantage of the weighting factor and to appear more harmless than they really are. I like to level for the speed points. I also like the idea of not being able to drop below the minimum prestige for the level if I get wiped. That's because I'm super paranoid about getting wiped.
Coins
Spend them early. Coins make a much bigger difference in the beginning of pvp than the end. I'd say use them all (save your bail coins) within the first 5 days to build, make money for techs, and speed main/warehouse in the first few hours. How many coins to leave for bailing? At least 25. But if you're like me and you're unrationally worried about getting wiped, leave more.
Making Money
I sell resources. Trading coins for cash is 2,000 for one coin. However, one coin will also buy you 20,000 resources. If you then sell 20,000 for anything over 0.2 you are making more than you would for npcing that coin. (remember the market takes 10%) In the beginning of pvp you can sell resources for over 1. The trick is pricing your resources so you don't drive the market down too fast. If you can be selling resources for more, why not keep it as long as you can. I usually scroll down the list and price my resources for the price about 2/3 down the list. Then I don't worry about it. It always sells eventually. One of the reasons market prices go down is because someone puts resources up low and they don't sell right away. Then other people see that the low price hasn't sold and price theirs even lower. The thing with the market is that people are always going to be buying. This means that if you refuse to price lower, they will eventually have to buy at your higher price.
I usually make enough money in pvp to pay for all my techs and level up equipment. Again, it's cheaper to sell resources and buy level up treasure than to buy level up treasure with coins. You can buy a gem for like 20k. You can make that much with 1 coin of resources sold at .2.
Alternatively, you could actually make real life money and buy coins. I'm sure you'd make more game money if you just worked another hour and then bought coins and converted them straight into game cash (as opposed to trying to play the game market for hours). Food for thought.
Now that we are all set up, it's time to play!
Scouting
Scouting in pvp is more fun than in main. This is because not everyone has max scouting so you can actually see what they have. Here are a few examples of a scout report:
Sign vs What it (probably) means
Lower than max speed for their level = Noob. Wipe em
High fortune, points in open chest = Alt. Or Noob
Prestige at 630, 1150, 3600, 6500, etc = No defenses, no army
Points in convince = Traps
Even resources = Farm
1,1,1,50 + high resources = Bait + turrets
100 Hundred and Enhancement level 20 x 4 = DQ (or alternatively: Hey
big spender, can I have your number?)
Level 0-4 + 10K prestige = Bait
< 9000 crop + a decent level = Could be starving, rescout
< 1000 crop + a decent level = Starving soon, rescout
0 crop + troops = Recall troops from hunt!
The more noob signs the better. Obviously people get very crafty in pvp and can trick you by pretending to look like a noob or a starve, so it's up to you whether you want to attack or not. Use your own judgment and send scouts if you're not sure. As long as you have bail coins, you can't really go too wrong though.
Who to scout? I usually scout every main city one level higher than me and below for a 7 minute radius. If I don't find anything then I scout sub cities. If I still don't find anything I might scout oases or I might steal and resign all the crop oases in a 20 minute radius. If I am still not finding anything, then call it a night and peace out.
When to scout? The short answer is all the time. But especially after 1 week when people forget to enhance crop for the second week and after 10 days when hunting troops return.
Attacking
Bring inf for traps. You take a smaller hit on the chunk of prestige you'll lose from losing troops. Bring at least one of each troop. No need to bring more than 1 archer (since we're playing inf/cat). You will need these for meat shields. If your defender has got cav going at you, and you won't wipe them before they hit your cats, make sure you get your cats up as far as you can before the cav hit. Then you can backward cat and take out the rest of their ponies.
If you see field length greater than your shoot, bail.
If you see more troops than you can kill, bail.
If you lose all your inf, cav, arch and still have traps to take out… consider bailing as well.
Hunting
Do this. (or don't… then I will wipe your troops

Subs
Steal if you want. I don't, I build my own. Get main/warehouse up and then build crop and cranny. Place your sub say 7-10 minutes away from your main city. Use oasis/fort portals to move troops from one city to the next. This increases your scout area greatly.
Farming
Once you have 250 cats you can start farming level 1 forts. I prefer to farm people. Once you find someone that looks like a good target (1150, 3600, etc prestige) send an exploratory inf. If it's all clear then send your inf and cav. Make sure you check when they land so you can bail if your target pulls troops out on you.
