You can either buy the nugget at the Marketplace for around 30k or exchange 10 coins for it.

Defence: defending is easy. Some defensive things that you can use are troops, traps and turrets, and your cranny. The higher level your cranny is, the more resources it can protect. For example, if your cranny can hold 50,000 resources and your at 24,000 and get attacked, your resources will not be taken unless the other person has really high break cranny skill.
Completely agree with this tip. You can still level up, prestige for troop training will remain higher, and if you are still in protection and leave your troops in your city, you may notice several players that higher in level moving their city next to you in an attempt to attack and take your troops for prestige because you read on the map as your prestige level, not as your general level.

If a person has less than half of what their cranny protects, none of their resources can be taken. So 24k resources / 50k cranny is untouchable even with a level 10 break cranny which will half the defenders cranny.

Are you able to transport resources between cities?
I went to my cities tab and saw the transport button I thought by using it I was sending it to my other city, but I never saw it arrive at my other city.

Valimorg, it takes 1-2 minutes for resources to transfer. You can track the time left until it arrives in your other city under the Actions tab.
