If you have a career type job, you might not want to let your employer know that you play games. Similarly, lots of employers do online background searches of applicants. It can't help your case if you are seen in lots of gaming forums.
Also, over time, your views change, your writing style changes, your outlook on life changes. You may be very embarrassed in 10 years to find posts you wrote when you were younger in LOL speak, or discussing how much you like to drink, womanize, or partake in illegal activities.
That is why I avoid giving out personally identifiable information. Being relatively anonymous also allows me to be me more without having to worry about what will show up on my "permanent record" on the internet. If I feel like being silly and sharing the latest lolcat with everyone, I can do so without worrying about how people in my personal or professional life will judge me.
