Upgradable Soldiers

I think the present military system is rather flat and boring so I am going to propose a major overhaul in this suggestion. I think Haypi kingdom should have a tiered soldier system much like it has now except you can no longer train a cavalry unit or an infantry unit and forget about it. I propose further steps you take with each soldier to advance you army in other ways aside from size. I think that if you made each type of soldier upgradable 5 times(for a total of 6 tiers) you could really mix up combat. My idea is not fully complete so I hope that lots of people see this and come up with improvements to make it an even better idea.

Basic: Infantry
Stats: As they are right now
Tier One Upgrade(Swordsman):
Stats: +2 to all stats except crop consumption
Cost to Upgrade: The cost to upgrade would be equivalent to a quarter of a soldier
Tier Two Upgrade(Specialist):
Stats: +5 to all stats except crop consumption
Cost to upgrade: The cost of half a soldier
Tier Three Upgrade(Unnamed):
Stats: +10 to all stats(except range) and +1 to crop consumption
Cost to upgrade: The cost of three quarters of a regular soldier
Tier Four Upgrade(Unnamed):
Stats: +20 to all stats(except range and except crop consumption)
Cost to upgrade: The cost of 80% of a standard infantry
Tier Five Upgrade(Knight)
Stats: +40 to all stats(except range) and +2 to crop consumption
Cost to upgrade: The cost of a basic infantryman
So overall a Knight would have:
Life: 227
Attack: 152
Defense: 152
Range: 32
Speed: 227
Crop Consumption: 4

As you can see just from above this is a very basic idea I came up with. It still needs a lot of work(Ideas for the other 3 soldier types) and names for 2 of the above classes. If you could suggest things for the missing parts of my idea i will update my main suggestion according to the best things I see in the comments. why not do it like some lv games out there and have soldier gain attack deffence rang and speed and less crop consumption , by gaining experience , every Time a soldier is in a battle and survives or is healed it is recorded and after x number of battles they get tier 2 upgrade , and x number of battles after that they get tier 3 ect or haypi could make a tech for each soldier type and u would spend the same amount as u would on crop tech and have 10 smaller tiers in the end max troop tech would be tier 10 and have 1.5 times the original attack deffence speed and range and only consume 75% as much crop as before. thoughts?

I like the idea but I feel like it gives an unfair advantage to higher level players who could just farm low levels to train up their troops.

That's not such a good idea, I think its more fun if you keep toying around with the same troop type...

But I get what you're saying

This could work, but but I think they might have to put a new building in or something because have to upgrade buttons in the barracks would make it too crowded. Also, it is a fair idea, but I think it would take quite a bit off work to get this going. And one question, would you select how many troops to upgrade just like how you select how many troops to train? And the last thing would it influence how much resource you steal from your enemy?

Higher level troops would have a higher carrying capacity- the more you upgrade them the more they could carry back from raided cities. I like the idea of a separate building for upgrading troops and I think the only plausible way to do this right is have each troop upgrade independently of each other. If you had to upgrade an entire troop section at once large armies would be at a tremendous disadvantage.
