That's a competition between the servers, ie direct interaction. The purpose of the rankings would be to show the rankings of all the players mains and alliances in their main server, and also show alliance rankings of each individual server for people from other servers to look at.

This would be a great idea. It would be cool to see how the top alliance in s5 matches up with the others.
