Avatar -.-

I'm sorry to be painfully noob but I am about to launch my laptop at the wall what image host do you all use for your avatars and more importantly how do you all get them to be the right size? I have the image I want to use, but I'm seriously about to give up on having an avatar and put it as my sig because nothing I do is making it the right size! Have resized it on my laptop to 80x80 to be on the safe side but all the image hosts seem to resize it to be far too large, and imageshack isn't letting me register, all my email addresses are apparently taken

EDIT: I have seen and followed the Arythy guide but unless I missed it this info isn't there.
