Re: *Language for World Chat*

I believe any English only policy is clearly racist, even though the racists enforcing the policy don't realize it.

Some say that English speakers are uncomfortable when they don't understand the chat in other languages. This argument is so insensitive that it makes me angry. Why don't you care about how uncomfortable it is for someone to be told, "Hey, your language isn't welcome here." This is such an obvious point that I have no sympathy for those who didn't think of it themselves.

The presence of non-English doesn't prevent English speakers from chatting. But muting people chatting in a foreign language definitely does. Furthermore, I think the vast majority of people don't care if there is some chat they don't understand. I think the English-only people are inventing this concern.

Also, some say that since the game is in English, everyone here can speak English. I'm an English teacher at a Korean school. I can tell you what happens to a discussion amongst students when you force them to speak a second language: it goes from raucus to absolutely dead.

When you ban other languages out of concern for the "comfort level" of English speakers, you are basically saying that silencing all non-English speakers is not a problem for you. And that is racist.

Finally, the swearing issue. Some blacks steal things. But we don't allow store owners to exclude all blacks. Some people swear in foreign languages, but far more people swear by using **** and s pace s in their words. Banning all foreign language is a draconian response. It says that we would rather alienate all non-English speakers than possibly allow one one-hundredth of the swearing that goes on in English.

Thinks about two issues:
1 Does it really bother you to see a foreign language?

2 Who is more likely to withdraw from chat, an English speaker who sees a few lines of a foreign language, or a non-English speaker who is threatened for using their native language?

3 Are there less discriminatory ways of moderating non-English?

Sorry that was so long. Serious replies appreciated.

Final comment:

The final word from support is that people cannot be muted for using languages other than English. Mods and experts please take notice:

"Hello,
Thanks for your letter.Sorry for the inconvenience and it is not our policy that players be muted for using languages other than English in the chat.we will take about this with our experts, sorry for the inconvenience...

Re: *Language for World Chat*

I wouldnt mute just for using another language alone, but I would prefer that people speak English so I can properly moderate the chat.

Re: *Language for World Chat*

I think you've ALL missed the point.

It is preferred that English be the main language.
As proven in s10 this afternoon, players can't help themselves but take advantage of any leniency given them.
Foreign language itself is not warn/mutable, but spamming for the sake of spamming in ANY language, is!

Most players posting in foreign languages are not having conversation nor even attempting to.

If players respected what they were allowed and not taking a mile when given an inch, there would be no such discussion going on right now.

So rather than taking this as a foreign language issue, look at it more from a spam point of view.

Re: *Language for World Chat*

I feel left out when I see people speaking other languages on wc. Should better be left to pm since English is the language used here. Take other languages to pm plz and if you're trying to find out who speaks said language, you can just ask. :) I do think it'd be interesting if there was a language toolbar or some kind of auto translator. (maybe there is and i'm just unaware. 0.o

Re: *Language for World Chat*

We would love to see now haypi is having so many players from all over the world. Our game is designed in English and most of our experts and players are from English speaking countries, so we recommend our players to speak English to better interact with others and in this case our experts can better manage the chat.

But on the other hand, if you choose to speak other lanaguage, we do respect that and there is no reason to be punished for speaking our mother togue in a game. But if you use your own lanaguage as an excuse to spam or cuss you will be punished.

I believe that love and tolerance should be the common spirit of our players and it is not the language that matters but the way you use it that counts.

Thank you Tracy.
