Hacking is not a problem that haypi users face alone. In 2012, over 30 million passwords were compromised when people hacked zappos, linkedIn, eHarmony and finally yahoo.
Hackers are good at what they do, but mainly people just suck at making good passwords. In fact, if you check PwnedList.com you can see if you are one of the 966 million people who sucked at making passwords and now have that pw featured on the list of cracked pw's.
And that's a problem because most of these people use the same hacked password for ALL their online accounts, meaning easy pickings for a hacker in the know.
How to make your pw safe?
Don't make it obvious. It shouldn't include info that can be found on your Facebook page or things like that. If your pw is bobsmith1 it's not gonna take but a few seconds for a hacker with a free code cracker to hack your account.
If your pw is Bob5m1th! It will be a little tougher, but today's cracking programs can handle leetspeak with ease.
Instead, try and remember some crazy randomness like horsepicklehat. This is actually tougher, but h0r53!Pick13$ is considerably tougher.
Even more important is to be sure to include random symbols and numbers. Always use all character spaces (usually 14 characters).
Creating a strong password is actually a compromise between security and convenience. Since most people opt for convenience, most people tend to get hacked.
If you get hacked....change ALL OF YOUR PASSWORDS. It's easy enough to get access to any of your other pw's once one has been cracked. Most sites offer the "forgot your pw? Send to my recovery email," and if your recovery account has been compromised, well....
In the end, haypi can't do anything to stop hackers stealing your account info. This is YOUR responsibility, and you should prepare yourself by learning how pw's (and pw cracking) works.
This is just the nature of the intraweb, my friends, and you should never be surprised when you see one of your facebook friends posting about how they got a great deal on airfare or wanna give you a chance on a free iPad sweepstake. This just means they suck at making passwords, like most everyone else in the world.
